Playlists

Making mixes and scouring record bins are activities we never outgrew.  Here we share our annual recommendations for the albums worth buying on vinyl* and a couple of very special playlists.

*Keeping up with music is a family ritual that predates the kids. If you want to know our process, you’ll have to ask Jen—and give her at least 15 min to explain.

Play for Keeps Collaborative Playlist

This ever-expanding playlist is a collection of songs played and mentioned in the MachMachines Play for Keeps podcast. Keep on scrolling for the Play for Keeps podcast episodes below.

2013 Vinyl-Worthy Albums

This is the list of albums (yes, full albums - not tracks) that we deemed worthy of being purchased on vinyl. These 6 were narrowed down from 28 that we gave a real listen, which was out of 181 that critics put on their year-end lists.

The Meat Tooth

From Jen to Dave

For our wedding, our guests were gifted with one of two CDs - a mix from Dave to Jen and a mix from Jen to Dave. We recently found a couple of leftover cases with liner notes and saved them for posterity (or until yet another format comes around).

This is Jen’s mix for Dave.  Needless to say, he is not a vegetarian.

The Sweet Tooth

From Dave to Jen

This is Dave’s mix for Jen that graced every other seat at our reception. Jen has tried to quit sugar many times in the years since, but it is a stubborn addiction.

Podcasts

Let’s face it. Most lutherie podcasts are luthiers talking to luthiers. But the whole idea of a custom instrument is to represent the player: their sound, their style, their story. So we started our own to continue the conversation with our custom players.

It’s called Play for Keeps: Stories for the Custom Curious. Check it out on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

Matt Vianello of The Grooveliner

Matt Vianello - guitarist, attorney, pilot, taxi commissioner, and marathoner - sits with his sister, Jen, and Dave to talk about, well, a lot of things. From his first MachMachines guitar to his current acoustic in-progress, the St. Louis Blues to Pablo Escobar, this inaugural podcast episode is worth listening through until the end. Warning: NSFW. Matt has a potty mouth.
